Mrs Matia Chowdhury, MP and Honorable Minister for Agriculture Calls on IFDC to Develop Balanced Fertilizer Package
August 5, 2012, DHAKA, Bangladesh - The Honorable Minister for Agriculture Mrs Matia Chowdhury, MP urged the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) to introduce a farmer-friendly balanced fertilizer package similar to urea supergranules (known in Bangladesh as 'Guti Urea').
The Honorable Minister made the statement at a workshop on Urea Deep Placement (UDP) applicators developed by IFDC staff under USAID funded Accelerating Agriculture Productivity Improvement (AAPI) project. She went on to praise IFDC for its work in Bangladesh to promote and expand the use of UDP - a simple yet innovative technology that involves the placement of urea supergranules into the soil shortly after paddy is transplanted. UDP increases nitrogen use efficiency because most of the nutrient stays in the soil, close to the plant roots where it is absorbed more effectively. Mr. Richard Greene, Mission Director, USAID was the Special Guest and Mr. Monzur Hossain, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture was Chairperson at the workshop.
